Bruce Bowen – Defensive Guru

Hated by some and loved by teammates, Bruce Bowen carved quite the name for himself throughout his NBA career.

Playing for the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and most recently finishing his career playing for the San Antonio Spurs Bowen was known as one of the greatest lockdown defenders of all time. Proof to this was Bowen’s nomination to the All NBA First and Second defensive team 8 times, as well as playing on 3 NBA Championship teams.

Bowen entered the NBA as an undrafted player in the 1993 season with the Heat signing a 10-day contract, but played in only 1 game. He bounced around through various basketball leagues attempting to establish himself and make his way back to the NBA. He continued this for 4 years until he found himself back in the NBA as he signed a contract with the Celtics. It’s here where he grew his legend as a defensive specialist.

In the 2001 season, Bowen signed with the Spurs where he set himself as a starter and began his legacy as one of the dirtiest players in the game. In the 2001-2002 season, he received many fines for infractions including a $7500 fine for kicking Wally Szczerbiak in the face. Bowen continued his hard-nose style of play throughout his career and was under the microscope of controversy once again a few years later when he got involved with Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns when his knee connected with Nash’s groin knocking him down to the floor.

Bowen played consistent through his career. He played hard and he played smart. Some would say he was the best perimeter defensive player of all time. This of course is arguable. His stats aren’t what you would expect to see from someone with such a well-known reputation, but if you ever watch him play you would have witnessed first hand just how tough his D was and how lock-down he was.

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny his skills!
