Kareem Abdul Jabbar Not Happy With the Lakers

To say Kareem Abdul Jabbar has been unhappy lately with the Lakers would be an understatement. He feels as though he’s been taken for granted and disrespected by the organization by not being immortalized in a statue outside of the Staples Center. Yes, he’s upset about not having a statue. Seems a bit selfish to me, but I’m not the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and didn’t win 5 championships with the Lakers so I can’t see through his eyes. The Celtics announced earlier this month that Bill Russell would have a statue in his honor built in Boston. Maybe that has something to do with his frustrations? To add to the story, he was supposedly told by the the team that the next former player to have a statue built in their honor would be him. Now it just makes him seem impatient. Whatever the reason, I don’t see a situation where he comes out of this looking good and he may talk himself out of his statue all together.

At the moment, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Chick Hearn, and Oscar De La Hoya are the only ones to have their likenesses represented on the Staples Center grounds and Jabbar has made it very clear that he should have one as well.

In an interview with Sporting News he first made his feelings known, saying:

I don’t understand (it). It’s either an oversight or they’re taking me for granted. I’m not going to try to read people’s minds, but it doesn’t make me happy. It’s definitely a slight. I feel slighted.”

He didn’t stop there. He later released a statement through his business manager that read:

“I am highly offended by the total lack of acknowledgement of my contribution to Laker success. I guess being the lynchpin for five world championships is not considered significant enough in terms of being part of Laker history.”

He still wasn’t finished. Last night he took to Twitter displaying his feelings on the subject again. You can find his comments here @kaj33.

No, he didn’t stop there either. He was on ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning show earlier today to discuss the situation live, on the air. Here’s video, via ESPN, of today’s 1st and 10 show discussing Jabbar’s situation as well as a clip of him on Mike & Mike.
