Heat show feelings on Trayvon Martin case with ‘hoodie’ team photo

The Miami Heat players, showing their feelings for the death of Trayvon Martin, took a team picture with hooded sweatshirts (hoodies) similar in style to a publicized picture of the victim. Dwayne Wade on his facebook page also took a solemn picture of himself wearing a hoodie holding a basketball close to his face. The Trayvon Martin case, its facts and any speculation of a future is dimmed when the greater problem of shooting related deaths can be and should be brought to everyone’s consciousness. Moreso, the plague of these types of deaths of African American and other lower-economic neighborhoods in every state and city across the U.S. Laurence Fishburne’s character, Furious Styles (Boyz in the Hood, 1991) put it best when posing why there is a gun and liquor shop on the corner of every poor neighborhood. The Miami Heat took a great step as a team to shed light on the Trayvon Martin case–so many other Trayvon Martin’s don’t get TV time or interviews or ‘million man hoodie march(es)’.

A great percentage of players in the NBA are of African-American descent. Blacktop basketball courts are in every inner city park, every suburb park and it is a great game that young, old, black, white and brown play. Regardless of the news stories and knee-jerk reactions from lawmakers in the Trayvon Martin case, it is time not to feel momentary sadness at this injustice but continue on with life. As with properly executed plays on a basketball court produce a certain ‘poetry’, daily life too has its rhythm. This rhythm must stop and change though when it tunes out important things like the greater issue of gun-related deaths in poor neighborhoods. But a timeout must be taken, a new play must be drawn up and a new pace must be found. Its never easy, but the key is proper application of fundamentals. Just as life in any economic class without fear of being shot (simply walking outside your door) should be fundamental.
