Bryant sticks foot in mouth with ’92 team comparison

Kobe Bryant, in an attempt to publicly energize Team USA for the upcoming Olympics said to numerous sports media outlets that the 2012 squad could beat the 1992 USA Basketball squad “The Dream Team”. Nothing could have de-energized basketball fans more and will probably draw attention away from anything the 2012 squad could accomplish in London. To add on, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the efforts of the 1992 squad which brought back notoriety to USA Olympic basketball. The “Dream Team” has been given credit for encouraging other countries worldwide to improve their national basketball programs. Every member of the 1992 team has been on a Wheaties box and has done countless commercials for any and every product. David Robinson served in the military, Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon were members of the same college team. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson had one of the best individual rivalries in all of sports, John Stockton and Karl Malone were the best “one-two” punch in pro basketball with their pick-and-roll game.

Not to mention Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan who were World Champions and also a tremendous “one-two” punch offensively and defensively in the NBA. Charles Barkley was the “Round Mound of Rebound” and Chris Mullin could shoot 10 out of 10 from any point on the court with his eyes closed. The 2012 US team has a few big names with Bryant, James and Carmelo Anthony but many, many young players. Bryant, James and Anthony have achieved more notoriety because of the name brands they market with Bryant having the most success on the court. Each of these players has achieved this notoriety and popularity because of comparisons to players like Johnson, Bird and Jordan on the court and advances in endorsement deals off the court. Kobe Bryant stuck “his foot in his mouth” and should remember not to offend the ’92 squad. The 2012 players should apologize to the ’92 team in their own private ways and buy them all dinner for the next year hoping they will publicly root them onto a gold medal in London.
